Obituary

Nancy Jane Rogers 1940- 2021

Nancy Jane Rogers departed this life on June 13, 2021, in Independence, Kansas, and is at home with our Heaven Father, and is whole again and pain free.

Born May 3, 1940, in Columbus, Kansas, Nancy is the daughter of Charles R.   Rogers and Ruth K. Jarvis Rogers, who were life-long residents of Columbus, Kansas. Nancy has one brother, Paul D. Rogers, and sister-in-law, Marilyn Rogers of Columbus, Kansas, two sisters: Carol A.  Rogers Detter of Seattle, Washington, and Barbara Rogers Dorris of Independence, Kansas. Others who survive are nephews, Joshua D. Rogers of Chicago, Illinois, Christopher J Detter of Bainbridge Island, Washington, Mark R. Detter of Valdez, Alaska, Kathryn C. Detter Cogburn of Shreveport, Louisiana, and Dr. Megan K. Dorris Cooley of Kansas City, Missouri.

Nancy was a member of the First Baptist Church in Independence, Kansas, and loved to attend Bible Study Classes and relished the company of her new church family and community of neighbors.

She began her education at Center Star School in rural Columbus and transferred to Central Junior High in Columbus her sixth-grade year. Attending Cherokee County Community High School, she developed a passion for the fine arts, and was active in theater and journalism as well. She received a Bachelor of Fine Art degree at Pittsburg State College and continued graduate work in Art at University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. Following her desire to excel in art, she supported her educational goals by working as a flight attendant for American Airlines and was stationed in San Francisco, California, where all of her time, not flying was spent taking classes at various colleges, and studying with other artists in the Bay area. Although Nancy never married, her life long friend, confidant, and advisor of nearly fifty years, Franklin A. Curcio, of Springfield, Virginia and Truckee, California was always by her side encouraging her in her artistic pursuits.

She painted murals for private homes, and created dozens of pieces of work, to include oils, pastels, sculptures and specialized in portraits and still life. Her final work, the “Prodigal Son” a 10’ x 5 ½’ mural, a commissioned work, will be removed from its present location in Redding, California, and brought back to Kansas. Nancy had no children, but her various works of art, were her children: each one was perfect and just as precious as the other.

Preceding Nancy in death are her parents, paternal grandparents, George A. Rogers and Sylvia E Wiley Rogers; maternal grandparents were John Jarvis and Emma F. Heinrichsmeier Jarvis. Also preceding her in death are her brothers-in-law, Dr. James C. Detter of Seattle, Washington, Daniel E. Dorris, of Leavenworth, Kansas, and one nephew, Jeffrey Williams Rogers, of Richmond, Virginia, along thirty very dear Aunts and Uncles, as well as twenty four first cousins who proceeded her in death.  She is missed by all who knew her and loved her.
