March 19, 1930 ~ December 3, 2021 (age 91)


Jacquelin “LaVerne” Schenk age 91 of Independence, Kansas died Friday, December 3, 2021 in Independence, Kansas.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, December 10, 2021 at the First Presbyterian Church with the Pastor John Wilson officiating under the direction of the Potts Chapel. Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday at the Mount Hope Cemetery with Keith Springer officiating.

Visitation hours will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, December 9, 2021 at the Potts Chapel with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friends may leave online condolences at www.pottsfuneralhome.com.

The family has suggested memorials to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel.

Jacquelin“LaVerne” Schenk was born March 19, 1930 in Independence, Kansas to Roy H. and Dorothy (Hand) Taylor. She grew up in Independence, Kansas and graduated from the Independence High School. LaVerne married Arthur Schenk and the couple made their home in Independence, Kansas. LaVerne worked at Sinclair Oil Company, Rolling Pin Specialty, and as a teacher’s aide at Lincoln School for several years. Daddy was Sheriff of Montgomery county from 1969 to 1989. She supported him in his work.  Volunteered as matron when needed for the sheriff's dept. LaVerne became an author at age 89 when she authored the book " Sheriff Art Schenk, Montgomery County, Kansas: Episodes Straight from the Sheriff", first printing 2019.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, served at Vice President and President of Kansas State Extension Homemakers Unit, was a leader in 4-H, served as Grand Matron of the Eastern Star, taught sewing, worked for Civil Defense and was also a tornado watcher.

Survivors include her daughter Ardith and her husband Gary Springer of Elk City, Kansas; one sister Donna and husband Ray Rothgeb of Independence, Kansas; one brother Bill and wife Mary Taylor of Independence, Kansas; and several nieces and nephews. LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Robert Taylor and one sister Ruth Chai.
