Ida May Hendricks

June 22, 1933 ~ July 14, 2022 (age 89)

Ida May (Black) Hendricks, 89, of Independence, Ks died July 14,2022.  May was born at home near Lookout, Oklahoma on June 22, 1933 to Daniel and Ada (Furtney) Black.  She was the youngest of seven children.  Her father, a veterinarian and farmer, died when she was 4, leaving her mom to raise all the kids on a small farm near Freedom, Oklahoma.  May graduated from high school in the Class of 1952.  She married G. Bruce Hendricks on April 27, 1965 in Woodward, Ok.  They ranched near Comanche, Ks where their son Douglas Ben was born in March 1966.  In 1972, they moved to Eureka, Ks where they bought a ranch. That property was struck by a tornado in May 1974 destroying everything. Soon after that, they moved to their ranch south of Longton, Ks.  In 1981, her husband died of cancer.  May was a hard working lady, whether on the ranch or doing various jobs around town.  In 1983, she took a job with Emerson Electric in 1983 and moved to Independence shortly after that.  While she officially retired from Emerson in 1988, she worked up until her eyesight would not allow her to.   She loved helping those less fortunate from caring for elderly, driving for various service agency, sewing and mending items, to demonstrating items at stores.  She liked to stay busy cooking, crafting, painting, sewing and traveling especially with her long time companion Dean Terry.  After the twins were born, she and Donna Rexwrinkle loved to come and spend a day with them.   She was a faithful member of Independence Wesleyan Church and the Elk City Old Iron Club.

She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, and her six siblings – Nellie Bates, Roy Black, John Black, Alice Welty, Frank Black, Fred Black.

She is survived by her son Doug (Liz) Hendricks and 2 granddaughters, Anna & Rachel Hendricks of Howard, sister-in-law Reva (Black) Maddox of Alva, Ok, stepson Frank Hendricks of Skiatook, Ok, step-grandson Clint Hendricks, and step-granddaughter April and several nieces and nephews.
