William (Bill) H. Wood, 97 of Independence, Kansas passed away Thursday, December 1, 2023, at Medicalodge in Independence, Kansas. Bill was the most kind and admirable man and he brought joy and kindness to all who knew him.
Bill was born on September 22, 1926, in Duncan Bridge, Missouri, to Joseph H. and Bertha Robuck Wood. Bill was the youngest of seven boys and grew up in Missouri. He served in the Army Airforce where he was stationed in Alaska. On July 15, 1969, he married Ann (Nash) Dickerson in Waynesville, Missouri where they made their home until 1970 when they moved to Independence, Kansas. Bill was the owner of Robo Car Wash and several other car washes in Independence. Bill was an avid gardener and provided produce to many in the community. He enjoyed quail hunting, square dancing and playing pool with his grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ann Wood, son, Dexter Dickerson, and six brothers.
Bill is survived by daughters, Gloria and Merle Matzen of Blue Springs, Missouri, Sylvia Moore of Blue Springs, Missouri, sons, Philip and Sally Dickerson of Owasso, OK, Dennis and Angela Dickerson of Dry Prong, LA, and Doug and Rose Dickerson of Independence, KS, six grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. A visitation will take place at Potts Chapel, 122 S. Penn Ave. Independence, KS 67301, on Tuesday, December 5th from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. A service will take place at Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, Missouri. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, a memorial be made in Bill’s name to AWOL or National Federation of the Blind. Memorial can be sent to Potts Chapel.
