William Falstad

William James “Bill” Falstad, 87, passed away on December 23, 2021 in Overland Park, Kansas. Graveside services will be held on January 4, 2022 at 11 am at Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence, Kansas. A private family celebration will be held at a later date.

Bill was born on January 5, 1934 in Superior, Wisconsin, the son of Ralph and Patricia (Calhoun) Falstad. He grew up in Superior, Wisconsin. After graduating from The University of Wisconsin with a degree in accounting, he worked as a Certified Public Accountant for Arthur Andersen in Chicago, Illinois before moving to Fredonia, Kansas to become President of Kansas Bank Note Company, from which he retired in 2006.  He was a member of the Board of Directors for the National Printing Association, Fredonia Regional Hospital, First National Bank of Fredonia, Kansas Chamber of Commerce, and the Kansas Performance Review Board.  He was a member of the Kansas Lottery Commission and Chairman of the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection. Bill was active in politics, serving several terms as the Mayor of Fredonia, Kansas and in various roles on state and national political campaigns.  From 1970 to 1973 he served as the Chairman of the Republican Party for the State of Kansas.

Bill enjoyed spending time with family and friends, both at home and on Grand Lake in Oklahoma, where he and his wife Peggy had a second home for a number of years.  There he was also able to pursue his love of boating and lake life, which he developed while spending his childhood summers at Lake Nebagamon, in northern Wisconsin.

Bill was formerly married to Diane Hollis and Jacquelyn Balentine. In 1986 he married Peggy Crumrine in Fredonia, Kansas.

Bill is survived by his wife, Peggy Falstad of the home; sons, David Falstad (Danuta), Dan Falstad (Susan), Robert Falstad (Valeria), and Travis Falstad (Beth); daughters, Julie Falstad Hayes (Howard), Kelly Dale, and Kristin Meyer; granddaughters, Brittany Meyer Rockwell (Alec), Sara Falstad, and Annette Hayes; grandsons, William Hayes, Robert Hayes, Thomas Hayes, Anthony Falstad, Jack Falstad, and Emmett Falstad.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Patricia Falstad; brothers, Robert Falstad and Thomas Falstad; and son-in-law Herbert (Hub) Meyer III.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Fredonia Regional Hospital or Alzheimer’s Association. Memorials can be sent in care of Potts Chapel, 122 S. Penn Ave. Independence, Kansas 67301.

The family asks that everyone who attends the service please wear a mask.
