Wilbur Gene Dodson, age 77, of Caney, Kansas formerly of Independence, died Friday, March 2, 2012 at the Windsor Place in Coffeyville, Kansas. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas with the Reverend Brad Sanders of the Caney First Christian Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel. Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2012 with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. The family has suggested memorials to the Caney First Christian Church and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Wilbur Gene Dodson was born June 20, 1934 in Independence, Kansas to Thomas William and Esther Lightner Dodson. Gene grew up in Independence, Kansas and graduated from the Independence High School. In 1954 Gene graduated from Independence Community College and then attended Pittsburg State University graduating with a Bachelors degree in Business in 1961. Gene served in the United States Army from January of 1957 to June of 1959 in the Airborne Division 505. In January of 1962 Gene married Carol Clark in Independence, Kansas and the couple later divorced. Gene worked for the J.C. Penny Company, the State of Kansas as an auditor and as an administrator of the TB Hospital in Chanute, Kansas. Gene worked for Boeing Aircraft while living in Wichita, Kansas . In 1971 Gene moved to Independence, Kansas and went to work for Emerson Electric which he retired in 1989. In 1989 Gene moved to Caney, Kansas. Gene was a member of the Caney First Christian Church, Masonic Lodge 324 for over 40 years, and the American Legion in Caney for 22 years. Survivors include two daughters Kimberly Jean Lyons and husband Chris of Kennesaw, Georgia and Kari Joyce Manley and husband Bob of Ocala, Florida one son William Dean Dodson and wife Stacy of Branson West, Missouri one sister Pauline and husband Delwin Cotton of Caney, Kansas one niece Tammy Rose Dodson of Kansas City, Missouri 5 grandchildren Lauren Ashlee Cagle and husband Luke, Luke Springer, Billy Dodson, Joshua Dodson and Nathan Plisek and 2 great grandchildren Kylee Cagle and Kenzee Cagle sister in law Rosemary Dodson of Topeka, Kansas. Gene was preceded in death by his parents twin brother William Dean Dodson, brother Paul Dodson and two sisters Leah Dodson and Wilma Jean Dodson.
