Waldo L. "Lee" Cain, age 92, of Independence, Kansas died Friday, December 18, 2015 at St. Francis Via Christi in Wichita, Kansas.
Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at the First Christian Church in Independence, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas.
Friends may register from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Potts Chapel. Friends may leave online condolences at www.pottsfuneralhome.com. The family has suggested memorials to the First Christian Church and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel.
Waldo L. "Lee" Cain was born October 4, 1923 in Ravenna, Texas to Enoch Earl and Ruby Jean (Hunter) Cain. Lee graduated from the Bonham High School in Bonham, Texas in May 1940 and soon after enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp. In January 1943 he was transferred to the Independence Army Air Field where he received part of his training. He served a tour of duty with the 15th Air Force in Italy and flew 31 missions over Germany as a ball turret gunner on a B-24 bomber. While stationed here, he met Dorothy Irene Lang and there were married January 11, 1948. After their marriage, they lived in Bonham. Texas until August 1, 1949 when they moved to Independence. They had one son, Fredrick L. Cain who resides in Topeka, Kansas. Dorothy passed away March 11, 1966 and on June 22, 1968 Lee married Ernestine Tripp Hinson and they reside at rural Independence.
Lee worked ten years in the grocery business, being employed as Assistant Manager of the A&P food store. He later was employed by Citizens National Bank for nine years. While there, he was appointed as State Representative of the 12th Legislative district and was elected in 1966 to a full term to that office. On June 1, 1967, Lee was appointed Postmaster and Sectional Center Manager of Independence and served in that position until his retirement January 3, 1986, except for four years, (1972 to 1976 as Assistant Postmaster of Topeka, Kansas). Following his retirement from the postal service, he was associated with Potts Chapel of Independence for 25 years and served from 1987 through 1991 as County Commissioner of Montgomery County. Lee was also a director of First Federal Savings & Loan Association of Independence for 20 years. Lee was an active member of The First Christian Church of Independence for 66 years and had served as Deacon, Elder and on the church board for most of those years. He held membership in numerous organizations. He was a 45 year member of the Independence Lions Club, a 61 year member of Fortitude Lodge # 107, AF & AM of Independence, Keystone Chapter # 22, Royal Arch Masons, Independence Council # 15, Royal & Select Masters, and St. Bernard Commandery # 10, Knights Templar, he was also a member of the Holy Royal Arch of Kansas, the York Rite College, Crispus Conclave Red Cross of Constantine of Pittsburg, the Scottish Rite, Valley of Ft. Scott 32nd degree mason of Ft. Scott, Kansas and a member of Mizra Shrine Temple, Pittsburg. He is survived by his wife Ernie of 47 years, one son Fred of Topeka, two stepdaughters, Cynthia Perry of Belfair, Washington and Lillian L. Belt of Independence, five grandchildren, Michelle Bish and her husband Bob of Independence, Roger Perry and wife Maria of Belfair, Washington, Nicole Brockelman and husband Kenny of Salina, Becky Cox of Coffeyville and David Rakes and his wife Leslie of Independence. Eleven Great Grand Children and four Great-great Grandchildren, three nieces and only one nephew and a host of friends. Lee loved his family, his church, his work and his friends. He will be missed.
