Viola Mae Wertz of rural Neodesha died Friday, June 5, 2020 at 92 years of age. She was a resident at Morningstar Care Homes of Neodesha for the last three years. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Independence, Kansas on Wednesday, June 10, 2020. Graveside services will take place at Darrouzett Cemetery in Darrouzett, Texas on Friday, June 12, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. Potts Funeral Home in Independence is handling the arrangements.
Viola was born September 21, 1927 on a small farm south of Darrouzett, Texas to Alexander and Mollie (Schoenhals) Yauck. She attended Darrouzett schools and upon graduating from high school attended Wichita Business College in Wichita, Kansas. She was employed by Decoursey Creamery and later by C.E. Ash Oil Operator in Wichita. On October 22, 1950 she married William P. Wertz at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lipscomb, Texas. They made their home for 60 plus years farming and ranching in rural Neodesha. Viola was employed by Amoco Refinery for 19 years and also enjoyed helping her husband with farming duties. She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, the Sycamore Valley Extension Unit, the 60s Club and Sycamore Ladies Aid. Vi enjoyed needle work, crocheting, knitting and quilting. She loved hosting family and friends for dinner often followed by playing cards and games.
Viola is preceded in death by her husband Bill, sister Esther Miller of Darrouzett, sister Alice Graham of Wichita and brother Edward Yauck of Darrouzett. Vi is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who will dearly miss her ready smile, sense of humor and unsurpassed hospitality.
Vi was generous with her gifts of time, talent and treasure, financially supporting many charitable organizations. Memorial gifts are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church or to a charity of your choice.
