Vernon R. Blake, 76, of Cherryvale passed away Saturday, April 9, 2011 at his home. Celebration of Life Services will be held 10:00 a.m. , Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at Potts Chapel of Cherryvale with Pastor Jeff Owen, officiating The family may be contacted at the Vernon Blake residence 1517 East 5th in Cherryvale for visitation. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date. Memorial remembrances are suggested to Hospice Care of Kansas, Cherryvale Rural Fire or the Cherryvale EMS and may be left at Potts Chapel of Cherryvale or mailed to P.O. Box 801, Independence, Kansas 67301 Vernon Ray Blake was born July 12, 1934 at Cherryvale, Kansas the son of Walter V. Blake and Mabel Mae Thompson. He grew up and has lived his entire life in Cherryvale and attended schools in Cherryvale. From the age of fourteen he started trading cattle with his father. He worked at the Parsons and Coffeyville Stockyards and later bought cattle for Gibbon Packing in Gibbon, Nebraska until his retirement in 2005 due to ailing health. On August 7, 1980 at Joplin, Missouri he was united in marriage to Vera Austin and she survives at the home. Survivors including the wife Vera and three daughters, Vicki N. Doherty of Independence, KS, Sherrie E. Coffey of Coffeyville, KS, Tammy L. Baker of Thayer, KS, four sisters, Patricia Liles, Dayton, Ohio, Sylvia Gibson, Cherryvale, KS, Linda Eisenbart, Cherryvale, KS, Bonnie Leahew, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Five grandchildren, Chance and Cash Baker, Trisha Root, Dillon Hilton, Lacey Fienen and Five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Don Blake and John Blake, and a grandson Jason Root.
