Varnel Guy Stair, age 91, of Independence, Kansas died Friday, July 18, 2014 at the Eagle Estates in Independence, Kansas.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 24, 2014 at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas with the Pastor Ryan Carpenter officiating.
Visitation hours will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 24, 2014 with the family receiving friends at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas.
The family has suggested memorials to the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas.
Varnel Guy Stair was born January 10, 1923 in Independence, Kansas to Guy Vernal and Clara A. Mayer Stair. He grew up in the Independence, Kansas an attended the Independence School system.
In May of 1941 Varnel married Virginia Carson. The couple made their home in the Montgomery County area before divorcing in February of 1973. Varnel worked at Continental Can, Aircraft Factories and a nursing home before owning an operating his tree trimming service which he did for over 30 years. In June of 1975 Varnel married Donita Girdler and she preceded him in death in April 2005. Varnel was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters Kay Westervelt of Independence, Kansas and Nancy Holmes and husband William of Independence, Kansas 7 grandchildren, John Stair, James Stair, and Deborah Stair of Arizona, Vernal Sturgeon of Caney, David Westervelt of Coffeyville, Tonia Taylor of Virginia, and Robert Richardson of Osawatomie, Kansas, and 5 step grandchildren 12 great grandchildren and 2 greatgreat grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son Larry Vernal Stair, four sisters, one brother and his parents.
