Thomas Robert Vaughn, 84, of Independence, Kansas passed away Monday, August 19, 2013 at the Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 23, 2013 at Potts Chapel in Independence with Dr. Paul Wilke officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence, Kansas with the United States Navy Honor Guard providing Military Honors under the direction of Potts Chapel of Independence, Kansas. Viewing and book signing will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursday, August 22, 2013 at the Potts Chapel in Independence. Friends can also leave a message for the family online at www.pottsfuneralhome.com. The family has suggested memorials to the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary and contributions may be left at Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Thomas was born December 24, 1928 in Merrian, Kansas the son of Sammuel O. and Mary M. Copple Vaughn. He grew up in Newkirk, Oklahoma and graduated from the Newkirk School. He later attended Independence Community College. On June 20, 1969 in LaFontaine, Kansas Thomas was united in marriage to Dorothy Pryor and the couple made their home in LaFontaine. When Thomas retired they moved to Independence. Dorothy survives at the home. Thomas worked as an accountant for MEC of Neodesha, Kansas and retired after 21 years of employment. He was a life member for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1186 Independence and a volunteer at Mercy Hospital Auxiliary for eighteen years. Thomas served in the United States Navy during the Korea era and served aboard the USS Tiru SS416 and the USS Besugo SS321. Survivors includes his wife Dorothy Vaughn of the home in Independence, Kansas three daughters, Jackie Newham of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Trena Oelschlager of Titusville, Florida and Connie Sexton of Fort Worth, Texas two sons, Rickie Vaughn of Longton, Kansas and Courtney Vaughn of Derby, Kansas two brothers, James W. Vaughn of Phoenix, Arizona and Richard Vaughn of Butler, Missouri thirteen Grandchildren and sixteen GreatGrandchildren.
