Thomas Wayne McPheeters, age 57 of Independence, Kansas died Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at his home in Independence, Kansas. Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 2, 2009 at the Church of the Nazarene, 3167 S. 10th, Independence, Kansas with the Reverend Dan Soliday officiating. Burial was held at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence, Kansas. The family has suggested memorials to the Mid Continent Band or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Thomas Wayne McPheeters was born August 15, 1952 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Vernon Leroy and Dorothea Marie Hall McPheeters. He moved from Chelsea, Oklahoma to Independence, Kansas in 1954. Tom graduated from the Independence High School in 1970. He then attended ICC and Mid America Nazarene College. On May 19, 1973 Tom married Rhea Hutchinson in Independence, Kansas where they made their home. Tom worked at CVRenergy in Coffeyville, Kansas as an environmental technician for 35 years. Tom was a member of the Mid Continent Band, Christian Motorcycle Association, was board secretary of the Cooperative Credit Union. He was music minister at Church of the Nazarene and also was a prison ministry musician. Tom was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Coffeyville and Independence, Kansas. He also participated in the Oklahoma Free Wheel for over 20 years. Tom played in the Neewollah orchestra and the Rothgeb Benefit Orchestra for several years. Survivors include his wife Rhea of the home; one son Aaron and wife Sara McPheeters of Boulder, Colorado; father Vernon L. McPheeters of Webb City, Missouri; one sister Janet Driskill of Neosho, Missouri and three brothers Leroy McPheeters of Independence, Kansas, Wesley McPheeters of Independence, Kansas and Dan McPheeters of Joplin, Missouri; He was preceded in death by his mother Dorothea M. McPheeters.
