Thomas Lowry

Thomas Richard Lowry, 82 of Independence, Kansas, passed away at his home unexpectedly on Thursday, December 29, 2022.

Tom was born in Arkansas City, Kansas on June 29, 1940 to Thomas “Reuel” and Jessie A. Lowry. He attended grade school in Wellington until his family moved to Caney, Kansas. Tom graduated from Caney High School in 1959. While in high school, Tom excelled in football, earning a scholarship to Coffeyville Community College. Tom played for the Coffeyville Red Ravens and then transferred to Independence Community College to complete his football career as a Pirate. In July of 1960, Tom entered the United States Navy, proudly serving his country in Vietnam. After serving 5 years, Tom was honorably discharged in July of 1965. While in Vietnam, Tom was a member of the River Rats. On August 18, 1973, Tom wed Leta Mosteller in Independence, Kansas. The two were happily married 36 years until her passing on May 17, 2010.

Tom worked in the maintenance department at Emerson Electric for 28 and half years, then retired from Amazon after 2 and half years of employment. Tom was an avid sports fan, attending every area sporting event at ICC and CCC. Tom also loved to play golf. If a sporting event was happening, Tom was there, whether it was football, basketball, baseball, tennis or golf.

He is preceded in death by his wife Leta, sister, Linda and parents Thomas and Jessie.

Tom is survived by his brother in-law, Jerry and wife Ruby Mosteller, and sister in-law, Donna Miller. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Potts Chapel and a graveside service will be held at Harrisonville Cemetery on Thursday, January 12th at 11:00 am.
