Stephen Bryan Winkler, age 57, of Yukon, Oklahoma formerly of Independence, Kansas died Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. Cremation has taken place. Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas with the Reverends Walter and Melvin Simpson officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. The family has suggested memorials to the Unite 2 Fight Paralysis, 5640 Alder Road, Hood River, Oregon 97031 contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas or at website u2fp.org Stephen was born October 20, 1952 in Independence, Kansas to Elzie Ruben and Mildred Marie House Winkler. He grew up in the Independence, Kansas and graduated from the Independence High School in 1970. Stephen also attended Independence Community College. He then entered the United States Air Force and served for 4 years during the Vietnam era stationed in Korea. On May 18, 1985 Stephen married Betheny Gaines in Independence, Kansas where they made their home. Stephen worked as a pipeline supervisor for ARCO in Independence, Kansas and Houston, Texas retiring in 2000. He then went to work for Teppco for 5 years in Oklahoma, City, Oklahoma. Stephen was a member of Quail Unlimited, Air National Guard, Kart and coached pee wee baseball in Elk City, Kansas. Survivors include his wife Betheny of the home two sons Justin Thomas Winkler of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Jacob Alan Winkler of Yukon, Oklahoma his mother Mildred Winkler of Independence, Kansas one sister Gayla Pouncey of Independence, Kansas one granddaughter Kayli Lynn Winkler of Dallas, Texas.
