Shelda Avonell Myers

Shelda Avonell Myers, 89, of Independence, Kansas, passed away Friday, June 6, 2025, in Independence.

She was born on July 11, 1935, in Iowa City, Iowa to Edwin W. and Clara E. (Morgan) Thomas. She graduated from Altoona High School in 1953.

She was united in marriage to Jackie L. Myers on July 12, 1953, in Neodesha, Kansas. He proceeded her in death on May 18, 2008, after 54 years of marriage.

She worked at the Parsons Ammunition Plant, Electra, and City Publishing Company from where she retired after 29 years.

In her spare time, Shelda loved crafting, especially sewing, needlepointing, and making blankets for all the grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Shelda was proceeded in death by her parents Edwin W. and Clara E. (Morgan) Thomas, her husband Jackie Myers; three daughters, Sandra, DeeAnn, and Traci; three brothers Waldo, Cleo and Kendall, and two granddaughters Crystal and Mary.

She is survived by her children Alan (Wanda) Myers of Independence, Justin (Tammie) Myers of Independence, Tony Barrington (Michael) of Mammoth Springs, Arkansas and Tina (Ron) Hoover of Independence, seventeen grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and seven great great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Thursday June 12, 2025, at Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas, from 5pm-7pm. Services will be held Friday June 13, 2025, at Potts Chapel in Independence, at 10am. Burial will follow afterwards at Altoona Cemetery.
