Rosemary Velvetta Gilliland, 96, of Independence, KS passed away at the Gansel House of Independence, Monday, September 8, 2014.
Services will be September 11, 2014 at 2:00 p.m., at Potts Chapel of Independence, KS. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, under the direction of Potts Chapel.
Rosemary was born September 2, 1918 in Neodesha, KS, the daughter of Smith Alexander and Rosa Lee Robinson Bowers.
She attended school in Neodesha and Independence School of Cosmetology.
On November 30, 1935, in Yates Center, KS she was united in marriage to A.G. Gilliland. He preceded her in death in 2003.
Rosemary was a homemaker and during WWII, she was a sheet metal worker at North American Aviation, was one of the original Rosie the Riveters. In the late 1960s she opened her own beauty parlor in her home. She was member of the First Baptist Church of Independence, Kansas. She enjoyed church and teaching Sunday school. She also served on the hospital auxiliary.
She is survived by her daughters, Janyce J. and husband James Hollis of Centralia, Mo. and Sally A. and husband Alfred Janssen of Scott City, KS. six grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents and one grandson, Scott Janssen.
Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church.
