Robert Toomey

Robert Bob Toomey, 79, of Independence died Saturday, July 6, 2013 at his home after a short illness. A Graveside Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 11, 2013 at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence, Kansas with Chaplin Charles Schenk officiating. Burial will follow the services under the direction of Potts Chapel of Independence, Kansas. Viewing and booking signing will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at Potts Chapel of Independence, Kansas. The family has suggested memorials to the Veterans Foreign War Post 1186, Independence, Kansas or the Mercy Hospital Hospice of Independence, Kansas. Contributions may be left at Potts Chapel of Independence. Bob was born June 27, 1934 in Fredonia, Kansas the son of Howard and Nellie Steeves Toomey. He grew up in Independence and graduated from the Independence School Systems in May, 1953. On September 7, 1955 Bob enlisted into the United States Air Force and was an Aircraft Mechanic 1. He was Honorably Discharged on September 6, 1959. While serving in the Air Force he met and married Sharon Jones in Cherryvale, Kansas on November 27, 1955. They were later divorced. On June 27, 1998 in Harrisonville, Arkansas Bob was united in marriage to Dessie Scott Toomey and the couple made their home in Independence. Dessie survives at the home. Bob owned and operated Toomeys electric. He was an honorary member of the Veterans Foreign War post 1186 in independence and the Independence Gun Club. Survivors include his wife, Dessie Toomey of Independence, Kansas one son, Brian Toomey of Independence, Kansas one daughter, Sonja Toomey of Independence, Kansas one sister, Peggy Brenneman of Newton, Kansas seven grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren.
