Obituary

Robert "Bob" Cooley, 96, of Independence, Kansas, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, June 16, 2026.

A Celebration of Life visitation will be held on Monday, June 22, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Grace Memorial United Methodist Church, 109 S. 13th Street, Independence, Kansas.

Bob graduated from Independence schools and attended Pittsburg State University. Following his education, he married the love of his life, LaVerne Cooley, on August 20, 1950. He began his career with Retail Credit Company, which later became Equifax, and retired after 40 years of service.

Bob was a lifelong member of Grace Memorial United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and served as Sunday School Superintendent and deacon for many years. He believed strongly in hard work, personal responsibility, and living by the Golden Rule. He could always be counted on in a crisis and was often sought out for his wisdom and advice.

By every account, Bob was "quite a guy" and a true character. He was punctual and believed that being early was the only acceptable way to arrive. He was prompt and often said, “If you’re waiting on me, you’re wasting time!” He enjoyed driving the countryside around the lake with LaVerne, cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs, watching Westerns, and spending time with his family.

Bob was a longtime member of the Independence Country Club, where he enjoyed playing golf. He was especially proud of recording six holes-in-one and maintaining the club's best handicap for many years. He also took great pride in being the club's eldest member.

Bob leaves behind a family who will forever miss his stories, jokes, advice, and the unmistakable presence he brought into every room. He worked hard, loved deeply, gave generously, and lived life fully on his own terms. Those who knew him best will remember him as funny, dependable, generous, and unforgettable—a truly good, gracious, and humorous man.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, LaVerne Cooley; his daughter Susan Cooley Nance; and his grandson, Jacob Robert Coles.

He is survived by his daughter, Cindy (Tad) Coles of Overland Park, Kansas; his granddaughter, Cassidy Coles; and his two great-grandchildren, Felix and Poppy McGuire.

Bob's family invites all who knew and loved him to join them in celebrating a life well lived and a man who made a lasting difference in the lives of so many.
