Richard Verge, age 78 of Independence, Kansas passed away on Monday, December 4, 2017 at the Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.
Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 8, 2017 at the First Southern Baptist Church with the Pastor Walter Keener officiating. Burial will follow in the Harrisonville Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas.
Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, December 7, 2017 with the family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friends may sign the online register book at www.pottsfuneralhome.com.
The family has suggested memorials to the First Southern Baptist Church or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel.
Richard was born September 3, 1939 in Muskogee, Oklahoma, the son of William Richard and Helen Louise (Baker) Verge. The family moved to Independence, Kansas in 1950 where Richard was raised and graduated from the Independence High School in 1958. Richard was a member of the "Kayo's Boys." He attended Independence Junior College and worked for Firestone Tire and Rubber Company.
Richard married Carolyn James of Wayside, Kansas on September 17, 1960 two weeks after his 21st birthday. Richard started work for USD 446 in Independence in 1961 as custodian and retired as Director of Building and Grounds. The football field at Schultz Stadium was his pride and joy.
Richard & Carolyn started square dancing in 1968 and Richard began calling square dances in 1970. He called for clubs in Girard, Fredonia, Chanute, Moline, Independence, Parsons, Altamont and Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Richard belonged to the National Callers Association.
Survivors include his wife Carolyn; daughters Michelle Blankenship and Misty and husband Adam Gill; Son Richard "Rick" Verge Jr; Grandchildren Matthew and Macy Blankenship, Anthony Verge and wife Jade, Madison and Mia Verge, Emma Ingram, Kortland Verge and Menley Gill; one great grandson Asher Ingram; brothers Willis Verge and wife Georganna and Tom Verge and wife Vera. Richard was preceded in death by his daughter Marsha Verge, brother Alfred Verge, sister Martha Edwards and his parents.
