Retha M. McCarty, age 90, of Topeka, Kansas formerly of Independence, Kansas died Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at the Aldersgate Village Nursing Home in Topeka, Kansas.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014 at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Burial will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Elk City, Kansas under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas.

Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, March 21, 2014 with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas.

The family has suggested memorials to the Grace Hospices, American Diabetes Association or the First Christian Church and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel.

Retha was born February 26, 1924 in Stella, Missouri to Albert A. and Lydia M. Painter Troutman. She grew up in Independence and attended schools in Independence, Kansas.

On August 8, 1943 Retha married James T. McCarty in Lawton, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in Winfield, KS and moved to Independence, KS in 197. Retha was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church in Winfield, Independence and Topeka, Kansas.

Survivors include one daughter R. Jeannine Miller of Topeka, Kansas three sons Larry D. McCarty deceased Wife Sharen of Hiawatha, Kansas, Thomas A. McCartyPat of Katy, Texas, and Mark A. McCarty Teresaof Springfield, Missouri 7 grandchildren, 3 stepgrandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by husband James T. McCarty, one daughter Debra Lynn, three brothers and three sisters.
