Ray Hearn

July 7, 1928 — June 29, 2020

Independence

Horace Ray Hearn, our beloved father, was called to his eternal resting place on Monday, June 29, 2020. He was 91 years old. He entered this world on July 7, 1928, in Witcherville, Arkansas, born to Henry Hardy and Stella (Gross) Hearn. Ray Hearn was raised in the Clark's Chapel community, Arkansas. His mother and father provided a loving home to five children, three of whom are deceased: Lorene, Clarence and Wayne. He is survived by his baby sister, Polly Hamilton.

Ray is survived by four daughters and one son; Elizabeth Christine Herion of Independence, KS; Vera Louise Blatto of Bakersfield, CA; Michael Ray Hearn (Saundra) of Keizer, OR; Kathryn Lynn Sorah (Randy) of Independence, KS; and Vonda Lorraine Forrest (Nathan) of Fordland, MO. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Imogene Hearn.

Ray Hearn was the very proud grandfather to fourteen grandchildren and to 24 great grandchildren whom he adored and treasured.

Dad was a true father who had a personal relationship with each one of his children and grandchildren. He had a way of teasing each one according to their individual personalities and places in life. He became close friends to his neighbors and his donut shop buddies, to the sick and the many who frequented his home.

Dad was more than what Independence, KS, knew of him. Ray Hearn and his wife moved to Southern California in June of 1952 and worked for 30 years at Dixie Cup Company in Anaheim, California. In that small hamlet he and mom began raising a family. At 55 years of age, he retired from Dixie Cup, and then worked ten more years for Sav-On Corporation, until he again retired and relocated to Independence, Kansas in 1994. It was during those California years he taught each of his children valuable principles about work, loyalty, hospitality, Christianity, kindness and so much more. How can we ever tell all our father did for each and every human being that was privileged to pass his way everywhere he went.

Ray Hearn was a member of the Independence Church of Christ from 1994 until his passing.

Viewing will be at the Church of Christ at 401 S. 11th Street, Independence, KS on Thursday, July 2, 2020 at 10am to 12:00 noon. Funeral service will begin at 12 noon.
