Orman Belt, age 90 of Independence, Kansas died Friday, October 11, 2013 at the Mercy Hospital in Independence, Kansas.
Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 14, 2013 at the Potts Chapel with the Pastor Grady Miller of the Bolton Friends Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel.
Visitation hours will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, October 13, 2013 with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The family has suggested memorials to the Wounded Warriors Project and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas.
Orman Belt was born March 10, 1923 in Chautauqua County, Kansas to Archie Belt and Ethel Coffey Belt. He attended the Independence Schools, later going to Wichita Trade School. He was employed at Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas.
On June 14, 1942 Orman married Catherine Thompson in Independence, Kansas. Orman served in World War II in the European Theater as a Sergeant, 3rd Army, 90th Inf. Division, 315 Engr Bn Combat Team. He received numerous medals including the Bronze Star. Following his discharge he was employed with the Katy Railroad at Parsons, Kansas Land Tax Dept.
In 1957 Orman returned to Independence where he opened the Belts Shoe Shop which he owned and operated for many years. His hobbies were woodcarving and fishing. He was a life member of the VFW DewlinDix Post 1186, Ninetieth Division Association, National Woodcarvers and local woodcarvers.
Survivors include his wife Catherine of 71 years, a son Larry and his wife Janice of Spring, Texas, a son Ronnie deceased, three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
