Opal Marie Ross, age 91, of Liberty, Kansas died Thursday, June 4, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Parsons, Kansas. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas with Reverend Don Farris officiating. Burial will follow in the Liberty Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, June 8, 2009 with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. The family has suggested memorials to the Good Samaritan Nursing Home and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Opal was born October 6, 1917 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to Lavell and Carrie Brown Pinkston. She grew up in Shawnee, Oklahoma and graduated from the Bethel High School where she was a very good basketball player. On May 24, 1939 Opal married James C. Ross in Shawnee, Oklahoma where they made their home. In 1942 the couple moved to Southeast Kansas. She was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Opal was a homemaker, and also worked at Lees Pants Factory for 13 years and five years at both the Cherryvale Nursing Home and a nursing home in Coffeyville, Kansas. Survivors include her husband James C. Jim Ross of Liberty, Kansas; one son James Jim and wife Karleen Ross of Parsons, Kansas; two daughters Minnie M. and husband Junior Birt of Girard, Kansas and Eva F. Ross of Liberty, Kansas; two brothers Wayne and Layton Pinkston both of Shawnee, Oklahoma; five sisters Minnie Landis of Hosington, Kansas, Josephine Leister of Shawnee, Oklahoma, Emma Farris of Arkadelphia, Arkansas, Erma Keener of Shawnee, Oklahoma and Martha Ross of Harra, Oklahoma; five grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren
