Opal I. Brooks, age 84 of Caney, Kansas died Monday, May 9, 2011 at the Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 12, 2011 at the Potts Chapel in Caney, Kansas with the Pastor Mike Morris of the Assembly of God Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunnyside Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Caney, Kansas. Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 11, 2011 with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Potts Chapel in Caney, Kansas. The family has suggested memorials to the Feed the Children and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Caney, Kansas. Opal was born February 27, 1927 in Gilbert, Louisiana to Bill and Velma Guthrie. Opal grew up in Chase, Louisiana and attended schools there. Opal worked at the Louisiana Army Ammunition Plant. She later worked at Als Drug Store in California where she met her husband Troy Brooks Sr. In 1945 Opal married Troy in Las Vegas, Nevada. The couple made their home in Pomona, California where they owned a restaurant and later the couple owned and operated a refrigeration business. The couple lived in Fayetteville, Arkansas from 1966 to 2001 when they moved to Caney, Kansas. Troy preceded her in death on October 3, 2004. Survivors include three sons Troy Brooks Jr. of Arkansas, John Brooks of Oklahoma and James Brooks of Caney, Kansas five daughters Kathryn Collins of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Lorraine Brooks of Fort Bragg, California, Joy Swindle of Keller, Texas, Grace Garrett of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Nora Trundle of Caney, Kansas three brothers Joe Guthrie, Sammy Guthrie, and John Guthrie all of Minden, Louisiana three sisters Odean Roberts of Winnsboro, Louisiana, Maxine Adcock of Minden, Louisiana and Beth Whitehead of Natchitoches, Louisiana 33 grandchildren and 48 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son Steven Brooks, and one brother Cotton Guthrie.
