Olive Maxine McKenzie, age 94, of Independence, Kansas formerly of Elk City, Kansas passed away Friday, May 5, 2017 at Montgomery Place in Independence, Kansas. Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Memorial may be made to Community Christian Church and may be left with the Chapel.
Olive was born on September 18, 1922 in Cherryvale, Kansas to Don and Maude (Coyner) McConnell. She attended school in Cherryvale, Kansas and Altamont, Kansas. Olive obtained a teaching certificate. She taught school in the Elk Falls, Kansas area for several years. Olive met her future husband while teaching. She married Robert McKenzie on September 18, 1945 in Cherryvale, Kansas. She was a substitute teacher in the Elk City, Kansas Grade Schools until she started a family. Later in life Olive owned a grocery store in Elk City, Kansas. She also was a Proof Reader for City Publishing Company of Independence, Kansas retiring in 1985. Olive enjoyed her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Olive was a member of Gingham Apron Club and her Quilting Club. She spent a lot of time cooking, reading and quilting.
Olive was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four sisters, and two brothers. Survivors include two children, Robert (Pam) McKenzie, and Clara June McKenzie; two grandchildren, Angie (Drew) Achong, Robert Jason McKenzie; two great-grandchildren, Kristina and Kale'a Achong; two sisters, Donna Williams and Nadine Gardepe.
