With a heavy heart, we announce the passing of Nickolette Leown Mealey, 75 of Cherryvale, KS and Grove, OK. On November 11, 2023 surrounded by loved ones she passed away to the battle given by a well used heart.
Nicky was born on March 29, 1948 to Earl and Sarah Alice Thompson in Havana, KS. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Jack and Whitey, two cousin/brothers Harold and John, and her grand daughter Sarah Alice Davis. Nicky is survived by her husband John Mealey, sisters Geneva and Juanita, cousin/brother Ivan, daughter Joni Gaernter (Lance), son Derrick Davis (Lesa), 5 grandchildren Tyler Boardman (Bree), Laken Flanary (Bradley), Jacob Davis (Bailey), Trenton Gaertner, and Whitley Davis, her 9 great grandchildren Kyndon, Ella, Oliver, Lincoln, Finnley, Hudson, Darcy, Jackson, and Fern.
Nicky graduated from Independence High School in 1966. She Married J.R. Davis and together they raised two children Joni Rene and Derrick Nicholas whom she proved to love beyond measure. Nicky soon began her career of 30 years at ACC, gained her associates degree from ICC, her CPIM and earned the title of a senior buyer. During her time at ACC she built friendships that gained extreme strength as the years passed. Here she also met her soul mate and in 1992 she married John Michael Mealey. Together they spent 31 beautiful years. As grandchildren poured into their lives her heart grew exponentially and she gained her most prized title, “Grandma.”
On top of her love for family and friends, Nicky intensely loved and protected all living and breathing creatures from traditional and non traditional house pets to all those in the wild. This included her passion for gardening, being a certified Master Gardener, spending many years as a member of the Indy Garden Club, and serving as the President of the Tri-State Iris Society in Joplin. All plants and humans alike were blessed by her touch during these endeavors.
The love Nicky shared with this world was absolutely contagious. Everyone and everything she came in contact with was better off for being exposed to her, no matter how short or long the time experienced was. She will be dearly missed, and we find comfort in knowing her heart was shared with so many. For that, her kindness and love will continue to grow in this garden we call life.
