Melvin R. Scott, age 93, of rural Independence, Kansas died Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at his home in Independence, Kansas. Celebration of Life Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 28, 2011 at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence, Kansas with the Pastor Dick Drumeller of the Crystalbrook Church officiating under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 26, 2011 with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas and from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Friday, May 27, 2011. The family has suggested memorials to AWOL and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Melvin was born January 1, 1918 in Eureka, Kansas to Ira Edwin and Christie Jennie Thornton Scott. He grew up in Independence, Kansas and attended schools in Independence. Melvin drove a truck for Grennens Feed and was also a carpenter. On December 15, 1940 Melvin married I. Maxine Hines in Garnett, Kansas. The couple made their home in the Sycamore Township. Maxine preceded him in death on September 15, 2008. Melvin worked for Universal Atlas Cement Plant LeHigh Portland Cement and worked for 32 years before retiring in October of 1980 as a yard foreman. After retirement Melvin was a rancher and cattleman. He was a lifetime member of the NRA. Survivors include one daughter Charlotte Scott Schmidt and husband Henry of Independence, Kansas three grandchildren Scott Barnhart of rural Independence, Kansas, Liz Schwatken of Sycamore, Kansas and Karen Seifert of Cherryvale, Kansas five great grandchildren Matthew Barnhart of Lake Park, Iowa, Travis Barnhart of Independence, Kansas, Terran Seifert of Cherryvale, Kansas, Taiylor Blanck of Sycamore, Kansas and Sarah Schwatken of Sycamore, Kansas two great great grandchildren Bowden Barnhart and Bella Barnhart both of Lake Park, Iowa one sister Mildred Sheldon of Nevada. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers Ira W. Scott and David Floyd Scott.
