Melvin W. Clayton, 96, of Independence passed away Friday, August 4, 2017. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at 10:00 am at the St. Andrew Catholic Church with Father Marco De Loera. Rosary will take place before the service at 9:15 am. Services are entrusted to Potts Chapel of Independence. Memorials are suggested to the St. Andrew School and can be left with the funeral home.
Melvin Clayton was born November 4, 1920 in Sycamore Kansas. He was the son of Thomas and Sadye (Henderson) Clayton. He joined the Army in 1942 serving during World War II. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. In 1949, Melvin married Marliee Hughes. They later divorced.
Melvin enjoyed tuning pianos and organs, playing the violin and piano, computers and photography. He was a long time resident of Independence.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers; Donald and Glen Clayton.
Survivors include daughter Catherine and husband Randall Stice, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, foster son Gene and Cathy Sanborn, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, sisters; Jean Parker and Leta Wyler and numerous nieces and nephews.
