Mary Stewart

Mary Stewart, age 89, of Independence, Kansas passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at the Windsor Place in Independence, Kansas. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 17, 2009 at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas with the Chaplain Mike Graham of Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery in Cherryvale, Kansas. Visitation hours will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, July 16, 2009 at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Mary was born February 27, 1920 in Independence, Kansas the daughter of James J. and Zella Smith Watkins. She was raised in Cherryvale and graduated from the Cherryvale High School in 1938. Mary was a member of the VFW ladies auxillary, D.A.R., Arco retirees, Arco wives, First Presbyterian Church of Independence, Kansas, and Desk and Derrick club. She was united in marriage to William Stewart on October 1, 1966 in Independence, Kansas and he survives of the home. Survivors include one daughter Patricia Romine and husband Chris of Independence, Kansas; sister Betty Jeanne Marchant, Bella Vista, Arkansas; a grandson Jeremy Romine, Coffeyville, Kansas, great granddaughter Kenna Romine, Coffeyville, Kansas. She was preceded in death by brother Ralph Watkins.
