Mary Mavers

Lifelong Independence resident Mary Helen (Howard) Mavers, 89, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, October 14, 2020.

Helen was welcomed into this world on October 3, 1931 to Earl and Mildred (Hall) Howard in Independence, Kansas. Helen was a proud graduate of Independence High School. She married Mack Crittenden in 1949. He passed away in June of 1954. Then on June 21, 1961, Helen married Ed Mavers at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Independence. The two were happily married for 54 years until his passing on February 1, 2016. Helen retired from Standard Motors after 20 plus years of dedicated service. Helen was an active member of St. Andrews Catholic Church for 50 plus years. Helen loved to read, do word searches, and spend time with her family. Helen will be deeply missed, she will be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, aunt and friend.

She is preceded in death by her husbands, Ed Mavers, and Mack Crittenden, parents, Earl and Mildred Howard, and sisters, Louise Russell, Joy Williams, and Virginia Gillman.

Helen’s memory will live on with her son, Tom (Shari) Crittenden of Independence, step-daughter, Linda Martin of Denver, CO, sisters, Ann Boots of Bowling Green, KY, Dorothy (Joe) Dunbar of Wichita, KS, six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Reciting of the Rosary will take place at Potts Chapel in Independence on Monday, October 19th at 5:30 pm with the family greeting friends from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Funeral Mass will take place at St. Andrew Catholic Church on Tuesday, October 20th at 10:00 am with interment immediately following at Calvary Cemetery in Independence. A memorial contribution can be made in Helen's name to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Due to local restriction face coverings will be required.
