Mary Lou Bowen, 76, of Independence, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 27, 2026, at Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, surrounded by the love of her family.
A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Potts Chapel of Independence. The family will greet friends from 5:00–7:00 p.m., Wednesday evening at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the V.F.W. Post 1186 Women’s Auxiliary.
Mary was born on August 23, 1949, in Fredonia, Kansas, to Ralph and Iva (Johnson) Ramey. She grew up in Fredonia and carried with her the small-town values of kindness, hard work, and devotion to family throughout her life.
On May 6, 1989, she married the love of her life, Edward Bowen, in Neodesha, Kansas. Together they built a warm and welcoming home in Independence, Kansas, filled with laughter, family gatherings, and cherished memories. Mary worked for many years as a receptionist for the Montgomery County Health Department, where her friendly smile and caring spirit greeted everyone who walked through the doors. She truly enjoyed visiting with people and took pride in helping others.
Mary’s greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, a proud grandmother, and a loyal sister and friend. She treasured every moment spent with her grandchildren — attending their activities, celebrating milestones, and sharing stories around the kitchen table. Her love was steady and unconditional, and her presence made ordinary days feel special.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Edward W. Ramey; and her sisters, Patricia Ramey and Shirley A. Edwards.
Those left to cherish her beautiful memory include her husband, Edward, of the home; her daughter, Dwanna (Tim) O’Daniel of Independence, Kansas; her brothers, Greg A. (Mae) Ramey of Parsons, Kansas, and Tom Ramey of Independence, Kansas; her sister, Lois M. (Johnny Ray) Allen of Dearing, Kansas; her beloved grandchildren, Nicholas (Kirsche) O’Daniel, Dillon (Taryn) Packard, Brooklyn (Brendan) Freeman, Trent O’Daniel, Brady Packard, and McClain Packard; and one precious great-grandchild on the way.
Mary will be remembered for her gentle heart, her warm smile, and the love she so freely gave. Though she will be deeply missed, the family finds comfort knowing her legacy lives on in each life she touched. To leave a special message for the family please visit www.pottsfuneralhome.com.
