Mary Jo Ann (Chaffin) Bays, 80, passed away on August 11, 2016 at the Jane Philips Hospital in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 10:00 am at the Bays family plot at the Niotaze Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted with Potts Chapel in Independence.
Mary Jo Ann Chaffin was born on August 28, 1935 to Alonzo Fred-Wiley and Jeanette (Gross) Chaffin in Independence, Kansas. Her and her father shared the same birthday. Mary Jo attended school and graduated from Independence High School. She was known at school by ‘Mary Jo' but with family and friends she went by ‘Joan' or ‘Jody'.
Jody was the first born to Alonzo and Jeanette followed by five sisters and one brother. Jody married Harold Dwayne Bays on November 23, 1954 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. They spent many years in western Kansas, Colorado and northwest Kansas before returning to Wayside, Kansas.
Jody and Dwayne had three children; Debra Eunice, Dewey Everitt and Diane Elaine.
Jody owned several horses during her lifetime that she loved to ride often. She loved all animals, but cats and horses held a special place in her heart. Jody was a very loving person, besides raising her own children, her home and heart was open to several nephews and her granddaughter Monica Bays.
Survivors left behind are sisters; Billie Jo Sumner Campbell and husband Melvin, Elnora Morrison and husband Leonard all of Independence, KS, Gail Marler and husband Rick of Neodesha, KS, Tanya Lour of Cherryvale, KS, grandchildren; Jessica (Hubbel) D'Amico and husband James of Georgia, Eli Bays and wife Wendy of Independence, KS, Monica (Bays) Smith and husband Michael of Sedan, KS, great-grandchildren; James and Jaden D'Amico, Morgan, Melton, Abby and Melanie Smith, step-great-grandchildren; Lindsey Thompson and Jake Foster; step-great-great-grandchildren; Kobe Thompson and Khloe Foster; also many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
Jody was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughters Diane Bays and Debra Hubbel, son Dewey Bays, grandson Damian Bays, brother Butch Chaffin and sister Patty Johnson.
