Mary Jane Akers, age 98, of Wann, Oklahoma died Thursday, February 16, 2012 at the Forest Manor Nursing Home in Dewey, Oklahoma. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 20, 2012 at the Potts Chapel in Caney, Kansas with the Reverend Dan DeWitt of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunnyside Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Caney, Kansas. Visitation hours will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, February 19, 2012 with the family receiving friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Potts Chapel in Caney, Kansas. The family has suggested memorials to the Susan G. Komen Foundation or the Alzheimers Foundation and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Caney, Kansas. Mary was born April 9, 1913 in Council Bluff, Iowa to Frank Leon and Elviria Bonham Haines. In 1917 the family moved to the Caney area. Mary attended school in Wann, Oklahoma. In June of 1931 Mary married Ranger F. Akers in Nowata, Oklahoma. The couple made their home on the farm North of Wann, Oklahoma. Mary worked in the Hotel in Elgin, Kansas and loved to care for her animals on the farm and to garden. Mary cooked for Lions Club in Wann, Oklahoma for many years. Ranger preceded her in death in January of 1981. Survivors include three sons Leo V. Akers of Boise, Idaho, Donnie Akers of Bella Vista, Arkansas and Raymond F. Akers of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma one daughter Evelyn A. Sparks of Burley, Washington 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six brothers sisters.
