M. Joan (Townsley) Scott, of Independence, passed away peacefully at her home the morning of Thursday, October 19th with her daughters by her side. She was 83.
Joan was born February 1, 1934 at Centerville, Kansas. The daughter of Clarence A and Corda Edith (Jackson) Townsley. She graduated from Blue Mound High School in 1952.
Joan married Donald G. Scott on October 1, 1953 in Independence Kansas where they made their home during the 60 years of marriage.
Joan worked at Electra, Bruest and retired from Emerson Electric in 1994 after 18 years. Upon retirement she took on the task of taking care of her three grandchildren for many years.
Joan loved attending any sporting event of her son, daughter and her three grandchildren. Joan and Don could be seen at the ball fields, soccer fields, basketball games, football games, and volleyball games cheering on the teams. She loved sitting on the porch with Don in the evenings, visiting about the day and watching the hummingbirds.
Joan also enjoyed traveling with Don and many of their friends. There were many trips to various casinos, canoe trips, horse races, and visiting friends and family. She also loved watching Chiefs football, the Little League World Series as well as KU basketball. Joan enjoyed "Black Friday" shopping with her daughters every year and she would "outlast" both of them. She also treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren. The grandchildren were often at "Gma's" house.
Joan was a member of the Grace Memorial United Methodist Church.
Joan is survived by her children Rusty Scott of Independence, Nancy Scott and Alan of Lawrence KS, Twila Augustine and Rodney and grandchildren Cooper and Morgan of Independence and Scott of Salem OR and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Scott is preceded in death by her husband Donald Scott and her parents Clarence A and Corda E Townsley, brothers C.J. (Jun) Townsley, Frank Townsley, Lindel Townsley, and Donald L Townsley and sisters Nellie Newman, Elma Gay, Betty Brillhart, Dortha Glidden and Vyrla Miller.
Services will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, October 24th at Potts Chapel in Independence. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at Pott Chapel on Monday, October 23rd from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm with family receiving visitors from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Memorials are suggested to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Online condolences may be left at www.pottsfuneralhome.com.
