Luella Viola Lovelace

Luella Viola Lovelace (Tarter), 99, passed away Friday, November 14, 2025, at her home in Montgomery Place. She was born on October 2,1926 in Flint, Michigan, the daughter of Logan and Mary (Mayginnes) Tarter.

Luella lived most of her life in Independence, Kansas. After finishing school, she met and married Tom White in 1947. They had three children Tom, Kleta and Dale. She worked at City Publishing as a Proofreader/Collator in Independence for 32 years. Luella loved spending time with her family and making wonderful memories as they traveled for family vacations.

Later, Luella married Merle Lovelace in 1975. Luella and Merle were married until his death in 2006. Together they made their home in Independence. Luella often would spend time with her grandchildren and her great grandchildren, playing board games, teaching them how to embroider and spending Saturday mornings with them and celebrating Mother’s Day at the Annual Mother’s Day Banquet. Luella had several talents, she loved crocheting and embroidery and using her talent to make gifts for those she loved.

Luella also loved serving others in many ways as she volunteered around the community. She was a volunteer at Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, AWOL and served on several committees at the First Christian Church. Luella was also a member of the Eastern Star.

Luella was preceded in death by her parents Logan and Mary Tarter, her husband Merle Lovelace, her daughters Dale Lasater and Kleta Counsil, her stepson Wayne Lovelace, grandson Andrew Simmons and great granddaughter Xzyrabelle Simmons.

She is survived by her son Tom and his wife, Dixie White, Charles Lovelace, grandchildren, Jason, Heather, Joshua, Desirea, Jennifer and Tiffany, and numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Services are under the care of Potts Chapel. A ceremony of remembrance will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2025 at 10:00 A. M. at Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Visitation will be on Wednesday November 19, 2025 from 5 P.M.- 7 P.M. at Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas.
