Lucille Lucy Gaynor Gibson Thompson, age 94, of Independence, Kansas died Saturday, July 2, 2011 at her home in Independence, Kansas. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 9, 2011 at the St. Andrew Catholic Church with the Father Andrew Heiman officiating. Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Reciting of the Rosary will be held at 6:00 p.m., Friday, July 8, 2011 at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Visitation hours will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursday, July 7, 2001 and from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Friday, July 8, 2011 at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. The family has suggested memorials to FORPAZ or to the St. Andrew Catholic School Foundation and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Lucille Lucy Gibson Thompson was born July 31, 1916 in Kansas City, Missouri to Rudolph and Irene Olive Brown Gaynor. Lucy attended school in Kansas City, Missouri graduating from Desoto High School in Desoto, Kansas. Lucy also graduated from the University of Kansas. On July 21, 1941 Lucy married Nathan G. Gibson in Olathe, Kansas. Nathan preceded her in death on November 18, 1967. Lucy worked for Dr. Glenn Pearson and assisted in the delivery of 55 home born babies and delivered three babies by herself. Lucy was an English Teacher, teaching in Caney High School in Caney, Kansas for two years. She managed 120 apartments in Wichita for 12 years. Moved to Elkhart, Indiana and did volunteer teaching to handicapped children for 2 years before moving to Independence, Kansas in 1957. Lucy taught Junior High School for 15 years resigning in 1975. She did volunteer teaching to two Vietnamese families for two years. On November 27, 1970 Lucy married Richard Franklin Thompson in Independence, Kansas. Richard preceded her in death on April 3, 1990. Lucy was a member of the St. Andrew Catholic Church, St. Andrew Catholic Church Altar Society, FORPAZ, P.E.O., Chapter E.F., Independence Historical Museum, Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, lifetime member of Independence Country Club, Friends of the Library, KU Alumni Association and Animals With Our Love. Lucy was a former member of the Independence Unlimited a stock club and a part of many production committees for Neewollah. Survivors include a step son Mike Thompson of Leawood, Kansas, step daughter Molly Thompson Pitney of Overland Park, Kansas Five step grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Irene Lucille Gibson, step sister and husband Clarice Dicken and R.R. Osborne.
