LEROY ALBERT GILLMAN NEWS MEDIA NOTIFICATION Leroy Albert Gillman, age 76, of Independence, Kansas died Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Fredonia, Kansas. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 12, 2010 at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Harrisonville Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel. Military Rites by the United States Army, Fort Riley Honor Guard. Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, June 11, 2010 with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. The family has suggested memorials to the Veterans Administration and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Leroy Albert Gillman was born in rural Montgomery County on August 11, 1933 to Roy Nicholas and Effie Marie McGuire Gillman. His father was a farmer and Leroy and his two brothers and two sisters were raised on the farm and they attended worship services and school at the Holy Name Catholic Church in Coffevyille. He worked for his father until he was called to duty by the United States Army June 12, 1953. He spent most of his military duty in Austria where he learned to snow ski and many other interesting things. Once he was honorably discharged May 5th, 1955 he made his way back to Kansas and soon began to work as a tree trimmer and was married for the first time. He and his wife had one daughter and one son. Leroy later married again to Violet and she came into the marriage with three sons. They settled down on a small acreage in south Montgomery County and he soon began his career in the oil fields. They lead a happy simple life on their little farm growing flowers, apricot trees and a few vegetables. Leroy had a Ford tractor he was very fond of he used to keep the property tidy and to take the grandchildren on short excursions. Leroy and Violet had 37 years on their little farm and their children and grandchildren have many memories and happy reflections of their time shared together. Leroy attended the First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife Violet of the home one daughter Gail Renee Gillman of Oklahoma four sons Mark Gillman of Oklahoma, Marvin Daniel Robbins of Louisiana, Gary Irven Robbins of McPherson, Kansas, and James Michael Robbins of Kechi, Kansas two sisters Phyllis Marie Van Noster of Jefferson, Kansas and Doris Jean Wall of Coffeyville, Kansas 5 grandchildren Danica D. Gibson, Kristi D. Robbins, Shawn G. Robbins, Jayson L. Robbins, and Jennifer A. Robbins 2 great grandchildren Ashton and Aaron Robbins. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers Wayne and Dean.
