Leona Barbara Bernd, age 100, of Cherryvale, Kansas died Friday, July 30, 2010 at the Mercy Hospital in Independence, Kansas. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 2, 2010 at the ST. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Cherryvale, Kansas with the Reverend Benjamin Shockey officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Cherryvale, Kansas. Reciting of the Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, August 1, 2010 at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Cherryvale, Kansas. Visitation hours will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, August 1, 2010 at the Potts Chapel in Cherryvale, Kansas. The family has suggested memorials to the Tipton School or the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Cherryvale, Kansas. Leona was born December 23, 1909 in Tipton, Kansas to John Baptist and Katherine Regina Hake Stiechen. She grew up in Tipton, Kansas and graduated from the Tipton High School in 1927. Leona worked as an operator for the Tipton Telephone Company and as a clerk in the Schmierdler Store several years and then went to work as a P.B.X. operator in the Jayhawk Hotel in Topeka, Kansas. On February 11, 1939 Leona married Lawrence Bud Henry Bernd in Tipton, Kansas. The couple made their home in Cherryvale, Kansas. Leona worked most of her life on the farm with her husband. Bud preceded her in death. Leona was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Survivors include six children Eleanor Gilstrap of Cherryvale, Kansas, Barbara Zorn of Wichita, Kansas, Edward Bernd of Dennis, Kansas, Jane Trollope of Cherryvale, Kansas, Evelyn Ellison of Cherryvale, Kansas and David Bernd of Cherryvale, Kansas one brother Al Steichen of Salina, Kansas one sister Rosella Kelley of Parsons, Kansas 17 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents twin children Mary Lawrence Bernd one brother one sister.
