Leola May Brown 101, Dexter , formerly of Cherryvale, passed away January 23, 2011 at the Dexter Care Center where she had resided for several years. Celebrations of Life Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 27, 2011 at the Bible Holiness Church, 606 Park St, Cherryvale, Kansas. Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at the Potts Chapel in Cherryvale, Kansas. Burial will follow at the Choteau Cemetery in Sycamore, Kansas under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Cherryvale, Kansas. Leola was born in Perth, Kansas December 28, 1909 to Charles and Hazel Black. She was the oldest of 7 children all proceeding her in death. Leola moved to the Elk City area in 1920 with her parents where set up farming. She married Glen Brown November 2, 1929 in Wichita. They moved to Sycamore in 1930 and to Cherryvale after the war where they purchased a farm where she remained until 1978 and then moved into Cherryvale. She had one daughter, Nelda Brown Hawkins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1984 and daughter in 2009. Leola was an avid homemaker taking pride in not working away from the home. Leola enjoyed hand quilting making an estimated 60 or 70 quilts, mostly for family but sold a few as a means of making extra money, most of which was donated to her church. In her younger years, she enjoyed fishing and gardening to stock up on a winter supply of most anything she could cook and get into a jar, especially fruit and berries... She was well known around Cherryvale for her pies, especially Goose Berry pies. She devoted a lot of time to reading her bible and made church and religion a very important part of everyday living. Leola is survived by a son in law Henry Hawkins, Winfield, four grand children Bill Backes, Chanute, Jim Backes, Daytona Beach, FL , Bill Hawkins, Wellsville, and Geni Hendershot and Michael, Powell, OH, and two great grand children, David and Layce Backes, Chanute and numerous nieces and nephews. The family has suggested memorials to the Bible Holiness Church and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Cherryvale, Kansas.
