Lena Sanders

Lena Sanders, 89, of Independence died Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at the Bartlesville Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday , September 6, 2013 at the Potts Chapel of Independence, Kansas with the Reverend Bill Booe of the Liberty Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Visitation hours will be held from 9:00a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, September 5, 2013 with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Potts Chapel in Independence. The family has suggested memorials to the Animals with Our Love AWOL and contributions may be left at Potts Chapel, independence, Kansas. Lena was born June 11, 1924 in Wauneta, Kansas the daughter of Hershel and Eva Winchell Blanchard. She grew up in Sedan, Kansas and attended the Sedan School System. On June 15, 1941 Lena was united in marriage to Walter Sanders in Sedan, Kansas and the couple made their home in Independence, Kansas. Walter preceded her in death in August of 1983. Lenas companion, Fred Redman of 23 years preceded her in death as well. Lena worked for the Cribben and Sexton plant for four years and the YWCA for 5 years. Lena then worked as a waitress for six years at the Santa Fe Caf, then Reds Caf for 10 years and Wigs, and later Sidmons restaurant for 19 years. She was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 1186 in Independence, Kansas. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Passauer of Liberty, Kansas and Judy Keltz and husband Warren of Bartlesville, Oklahoma one sister, Peggy Watts of Wichita, Kansas five grandchildren, Connie Greer, Lori Boyle, Christy Stegman, Nathon Quigley and Melissa Quigley eight greatgrandchildren and 2 greatgreat grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Dick Sanders.
