Laurine Smith was born October 8, 1916 in Grenola, Kansas to Charlie and Sarah Johnson Hull. She grew up in southeast Kansas except for four years when the family lived in Arkansas. On January 31, 1936 Laurine married B.L. Red Smith in Sedan, Kansas. Early in their marriage they lived and farmed near Wauneta, later moving to the Peru area where they farmed until retiring in 1988. Since that time they have lived in Sedan and in Caney with Red preceding her in death in 2004. Also preceding her in death was a grandson Eric Mason. Survivors include three daughters Dorothy Erway of Wichita, Kansas, Alice Hook of Caney, Kansas and Linda Mason of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma one son Charles Smith of Peru, Kansas 3 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Laurine was a kind and loving wife and mother who also found time to reach out to those around her. She often cooked and sewed or otherwise helped neighbors and those in her church family. We, her children and grandchildren, owe her a debt of gratitude for the way she gently but firmly helped to guide our lives in many ways, especially toward a Godcentered way of life.
