June Ethel Self, age 87 of Independence, Kansas died Sunday, February 22, 2015 at the Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, Kansas. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. A celebration of life will be held Friday, March 6, at 2:00 PM at Church of the Epiphany, Episcopal, 400 East Maple, Independence, Kansas

June was born February 2, 1928 in Independence, Kansas to Walter Allen Sr. and Ruth Ida (Chilcote) McKain. She grew up in Independence, Kansas and graduated from the Independence High School. June graduated from Independence Community College.

On March 1, 1946 June married W. Clark Self. The couple made their home in Independence, Kansas. Clark preceded her in death in 1985. June was a homemaker and a member of the Eva Chapter #18 order of Eastern Star (Past Matron), the social Order of Beauceant, Ladies Library and Art Association, Wednesday Study Club, B. Gen W. A. Kurtis SEK District #612 Marine Corp League, VFW ladies auxiliary, AARP, DAR, Chetopa Creek Gun Club, Kansas Muzzle loading Association and NRA. June was also a member of the Church of the Epiphany, Episcopal. June enjoyed the CUFF Dinners, not only the food but also the company of others who came to enjoy the meal. She and her husband were travelers. They collected rocks and gemstones where ever their travels took them. She was fond of Siamese cats especially her Sandaria. June was very witty and enjoyed sharing jokes and cartoons if she thought she could make you laugh. In all her illness she never lost her ability to make her own decisions. She was proud to be a resident of Independence; she loved her heritage and the small town life, especially Neewollah when she would walk from one food stand to another sampling each one's offering.

Survivors include one son Willis Clark (Bill) Self III of Ogden, Utah, two grandchildren Willis C. Billy) Self IV and McKinley Self both of Ogden, Utah; one brother Walter A. McKain of Wichita, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother.

June has suggested memorials to Church of the Epiphany, P.O. Box 655,Independence, Kansas 67301; The Lupus Foundation of America, P.O. Box 12204, Wichita, KS 67277, or AWOL, 116 South 23rd Street, Independence, KS 67301. Memorials may be left at the church.
