Julia Flowers

Julia Kay Flowers passed away in Laredo, Texas on November 22, 2019, at the age of seventy-three.

Julia was born on March 22. 1946 in Fort Worth, Texas to James and Dorothy Strickland. Julia met Gail Flowers in Liberal, Kansas in 1962. The first time she saw him she said, “I’m going to marry that man.” They were married on July 11, 1963 in Liberal, Kansas and were happily married for fifty-six years and eight months. Julia and Gail had two children Julie Anne Flowers Warden and Gail Edward Flowers Jr.

In 1988, Julia graduated from Panhandle State University with her Bachelors of Arts/Social Studies. During her studies at Panhandle State, she achieved academic excellence by receiving memberships in both Phi Alpha Theta and Alpha Chi.  She earned her Master’s Degree from Fort Hays State University in 1992. During her studies at Fort Hays, she again achieved academic excellence by receiving membership to Phi Delta Kappa.

Julia helped her husband Gail run two service stations in Liberal, Kansas before moving to Independence, Kansas in 1988. Julia then spent the next twenty- two years working with Tri- County Cooperative teaching special education students.

Julia spent her summers at Boiling Springs Girl Scout Camp in Woodward, Oklahoma. She became affectionately known as Hiawatha.

Julia had many interests in life, but the most important thing to her was her family. She spent years advocating for her husband to the VA. She was always available to answer a phone call or a text and lend a listening ear.

Julia is survived by her husband, Gail Flowers of Independence, Kansas, her daughter Julie Flowers Warden of Jarrell, Texas, her son Gail Flowers Jr. (Jennifer) of Lawrence, Kansas, her granddaughters Jaime Price (Michael), Linsey Phillips (Aaron), and Cassandra Flowers (Ryan), her great grandson Alexander Warden, her brothers Danny Keller (Dianna), and Burl Keller (Jan), and her sister Kathryn Miller.

Julia is preceded in death by her father James Strickland, her mother Dorothy Wightman, her sister Nelmalee Plunk, and her son-in-law Tony Warden.

Thank you to all who have come out to show their love and support to the family and to celebrate the life of Julia. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered. Visitation will be held at Potts Chapel in Independence on Tuesday, November 26th with the family greeting friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, November 27th at Potts Chapel at 10:00 am with interment immediately following at Mount Hope Cemetery.
