Josephine Riggs

Josephine Riggs, 85, of Independence passed away Tuesday February 11, 2014 at her home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday February 15, 2014 at the St. Andrews Catholic Church in Independence, Kansas with Father Steve Thapwa and Father Andrew Heiman officiating. Burial will follow at the Calvary Cemetery, in Independence, Kansas under the direction of the Potts Chapel, Independence, Kansas.
Reciting of the Rosary will be Friday February 14, 2014 at Potts Chapel at 6:00 p.m. Viewing will be from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday. The family will greet friends following the Rosary until 8:00 p.m. Friday.
The family has suggested memorials to the St. Andrews Catholic School and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas.
Josephine was born June 28, 1928 in Mound Valley, Kansas the daughter of Salvadore and Loreto Leon Ortega.
She grew up in Mound Valley and attended the Mound Valley and Cherryvale School Systems.
Josephine then attended the Wayne School of Nursing in Chicago from which she received her Nursing Degree.
On November 26, 1954 at the St. Andrew Catholic Church in Independence she was united in marriage to Clayton Riggs and the couple made their home in Independence. Clayton survives at the home.
Josephine worked as a Registered Nurse for Mercy Hospital and then the Kings Nursing Home.
She was a member of the St Andrews Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She was also a member of the V F W Womens Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband Clayton Riggs of the home, three sons Christopher Riggs and Daniel Riggs both of Wichita, Ks. Robert Riggs of Independence, Ks. one daughter Katrina Williams of The Woodlands, Tx., one brother Daniel Hernandez of Independence, Ks., and one sister Mary Lopez also of Independence. Nine grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Josephine was preceded in death by two brothers Jesus Ortega and Joseph Hernandez
