Johnie Dean Surrett, age 87, of Caney, Kansas died Saturday, September 25, 2010 at the Wilson County Hospital in Neodesha, Kansas. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at the Potts Chapel in Caney, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Sunnyside Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Caney, Kansas. Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, September 27, 2010 with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Potts Chapel in Caney, Kansas. The family has suggested memorials to the Disabled American Veterans and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Caney, Kansas. Johnie was born December 7, 1922 in Washington County, Oklahoma to Henry Hank and Beulah P. Mackel Surrett. He grew up in Caney, Kansas and attended the Caney High School. Johnie played summer baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals before entering the United States Navy. He served during World War II as a 1st Class Boatsman Mate on the U.S.S. Bunkerhill. Johnie received the Purple Heart before being honorable discharged. After returning home Johnie attended Coffeyville Community College and worked for Southwestern Bell. On April 26, 1946 Johnie married Loraine Combs. Johnie worked for City Service Gas Company working in Greensburg, and Caney, Kansas before retiring in 1986. They then enjoyed spending time on Grand Lake. Loraine preceded him in death. He was a member of the VFW and attended the Caney United Methodist Church. Survivors include one son Dean Surrett of Independence, Kansas two daughters Vicki and husband Rene Montalvo of Neodesha, Kansas and Debbie and husband Alan Allison of Greensburg, Kansas one brother Dick Surrett of Wyoming five grandchildren Angela Smith of Lincoln, Nebraska, Mindy Buoy of Neodesha, Kansas, Alana Barkley of McPherson, Kansas, Johna Piatt of Neodesha, Kansas and Lane Allison of Greensburg, Kansas five great grandchildren Breanna and Brendon Buoy of Neodesha, Kansas, Kaitlyn and Emmalee Smith of Lincoln, Nebraska and Bo Barkley of McPherson, Kansas companion Wilma Ward of Neodesha, Kansas. Johnie was preceded in death by one sister Patti Jean Shutt.
