John Boyd Montgomery Sr., a beacon of kindness and love, passed away on December 14th, 2023, leaving behind a legacy that touched the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. Born on August 14th, 1926 in Jersey City, New Jersey, he graced the world with his warmth and generosity.
Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Darlyne Behee Montgomery, his son John Boyd Montgomery Jr, and his daughter Cynthia Bell, John's departure leaves a void that echoes the depth of his endless love for others.
He is survived by his granddaughters, Apryl Bell McGill, Calli Sandon, and Tia Barriger, as well as 7 great grandchildren, who carry forward the essence of his spirit and kindness.
John, deeply loved and deeply loving in return, spent his life immersed in his passions for art, photography, poetry, and music, generously sharing these treasures with everyone around him.
A man of diverse interests, John found solace in fishing, the joy of reading, and an insatiable thirst for knowledge that he never ceased to quench. His inquisitive spirit served as an inspiration to all who knew him.
His benevolence extended well beyond the realms of creativity; John was a dedicated philanthropist, donating to numerous charities and giving selflessly wherever he could. His contributions to his family and to the world will forever be cherished.
John joined the United States Air Force as a photographer and carbine marksman, bravely serving in both World War II and the Korean War. While in active service, he earned multiple distinctions for excellent and honorable conduct. His profound patriotism and pride in his country were evident throughout his life.
John then dedicated his career to helping others be prepared for and protected from the unexpected, opening and operating Montgomery Insurance until his retirement.
In the twilight of his journey, John peacefully transitioned to his heavenly home, surrounded by his friends at Eagle Estates in Independence, Kansas. His legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering commitment to others will endure, a testament to a life well-lived and a heart well-loved. May he rest in eternal peace.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Your donations will support scholarships, enabling children to embrace the joy of art—an endeavor close to John's heart.
Final arrangements are trusted to Potts Chapel of Independence. Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.
