John Emmit Mills
John Emmit Mills, age 90 of West Columbia, South Carolina formerly of Independence, Kansas passed away Thursday, July 27, 2017 at the Brookdale of Lexington.
Celebration of Life Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 3, 2017 at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel.
Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at the Potts Chapel. Friends may leave online condolences at www.pottsfuneralhome.com.
John was born October 21, 1926 in Chautauqua County near Sedan, Kansas to Carl Walton and Piccola (Robinson) Mills. John entered the United States Navy on January 6, 1945 and was active duty until May 10, 1946 then he served in the United States Navy Reserves until retiring on October 21, 1986.
John married Margaret Magee in October of 1944 and the couple later divorced. Moving to the Independence area in 1960 John worked at the United States Post Office for 20 years as a clerk in Independence, Kansas.
On May 27, 1978 John married Lillian J. Mellen in Fredonia, Kansas. John was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Fleet Reserve Association.
He is survived by his wife Lillian J. Mills, West Columbia, SC.; 2 brothers and 1 sister: Earl W. Mills, Sycamore,KS., Beryl A. Mills, Independence, KS., and Judith K. Vincent, Murray, Utah; 5 children: Anita M. Jones, Ozawkie, KS., John W. Mills, Leesville, SC., Ronald S. Mills, Elk City, KS., Mabel M. Livergood, Ozawkie, KS., Robert L. Mills, Sycamore, KS.; 15 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren,and 7 great great grandchildren.
