John E. Medsker, age 86, of Cherryvale, Kansas died Thursday, February 5, 2009 at the Cherryvale Care Center in Cherryvale, Kansas. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 09, 2009 at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas with the Reverend Randal Sorha officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence, Kansas. Visitation hours will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, February 8, 2009 with the family receiving friends 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. John was born December 1, 1922 in Gallatin, Missouri to Nova F. and Elna Bauer Medsker. He grew up in Cherryvale, Kansas attended schools in Cherryvale. On September 19, 1942 John married Helen G. King in Joplin, Missouri and they made their home in Independence, Kansas. On January 18, 1943 John entered the United States Army and served in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He was honorable discharged on February 1, 1946. John worked for Southwestern Bell as a cable splicer, installer and repairman for 29 years before his retirement. He was a member of the Truth Tabernacle, Telephone Pioneers and the VFW. Survivors include his wife Helen G. Medsker of Independence, Kansas; two sons John M. and Steve Medsker both of Independence, Kansas; three daughters Becky Bright, Linda Blummer and Kathy Lentz all of Independence, Kansas; two sisters Frances M. Schierlman and Fern E. McHugh both of Cherryvale, Kansas; 19 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.
