John Michael Mangan

September 1, 1960 — March 21, 2024

Independence, Kansas

John Michael Mangan, 63, of Independence, KS, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 21st, 2024. He was born in Carthage, MO to James L. and Anita (Smith) Mangan. John attended Field Kindley High School, Coffeyville Community College and Pittsburg State University.

On December 23,1987, John married the love of his life, Chris (Lewis) Mangan and together they had three beautiful daughters, Breezy, Molly and Lexy who were his whole world.

In June of 2023 due to health issues, John retired as a sales manager at Hugo’s Industrial Supply. John's biggest passion in life was coaching football. He coached at Coffeyville Community College, Independence High School, Labette County High School and little league football throughout the years. Something he will be remembered for was his ability to mentor and teach young men about life through football. In the 24 years he coached, he never forgot each player’s position and jersey number and would more than likely call you by your number rather than your name.

When John wasn’t coaching football he was watching it, whether that be professional, college or game film. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing and most of all spending time with his family especially his five granddaughters.  His love for his wife was extraordinary. Their relationship was a true love story. He had a love for life. He was always dancing, singing, being silly and loved to put a smile on anyone's face. Throughout John’s journey with cancer he inspired many people with his strength and positive attitude. John always lived by his saying “God is good, life is good''. As you remember John, do so with a smile and happiness in your heart because that’s what he would want for you.

John is preceded in death by his father James L. Mangan.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Chris Mangan; three daughters Breezy (Derek) Laforge, Molly (Brady) Jones, Lexy (Travis) Sanders; his mother, Anita Mangan; three brothers Don (Vicki) Mangan, Jimmy (Tayna) Mangan, Todd Mangan, one sister Pam (Steve) Mangan; five granddaughters Hattie, Ella, Millie, Georgia, and Andie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
