John Thomas Blakemore

September 12, 1929 — March 31, 2024

Independence, Kansas

John Thomas Blakemore was born September 12th, 1929, and passed peacefully in his sleep

Sunday March 31st, 2024 at 94 years of age. He was the oldest of 8 kids and had quit school at

the age of 8 years to help care for his family. John was a hardworking man and partook in a

variety of job industries that ranged from chopping hedge posts, selling at auction at a young

age, and hand blowing glass in the factory in Caney, KS. John was the type of man that no job

was beneath him if it provided for his family, and was more than willing and happy to do what

was needed to make certain his family was provided for.

Talking with everyone, the range of memories are incredible from being no more than a child

working at a dairy making pickups all over Kansas and northeast Oklahoma, to working on an

oilfield. One of the most memorable stories ever told was when John and his brother in law

Doodle were working to help install gas lines throughout the city of Bartlesville and were in

charge of blasting the rock to make way. Apparently, they were having such a good time and lost

track of the charge amount and blew the windows out of a large number of houses in the area.

Needless to say they were both promptly fired. He was a man that had lived a hell of a life and

had a million of these types of stories.

He is survived by his son and daughter in law Tom and Debbie Blakemore, Grandkids: John and

Ashley Blakemore, Joey and Dora Friend, Justin Gorton, and Sara Phipps. Great Grandkids:

Zane, Koralee, Domanic, and Lyric Blakemore and Cole and Gunner Phipps.

Stepchildren: Ralph and wife Shirley Taton, Sam Taton, Walter Taton, Nancy and Jim

Friesburg, Brenda Markfort (Taton) and Tina Kyle Wyckoff, siblings, Jim and wife Joyce Blakemore, Dave and wife Diana Blakemore, and Geri and husband Bill Kolb, fourteen grandchildren, Twenty-one

great grandkids and thirty-seven great-great grandkids.

He is preceded in death by his late wives; Dora (Hockett, Taton) Blakemore married June 1st

1965 for 36 years before her passing, and Hazel Blakemore (Vineyard) married in 2003 for 12

years until her passing in 2015. Siblings: Joe Blakemore, Thelma Dunham, Marilyn Harrison, and Betty Hull. Children: Dorothy (Taton) and Ed Bacon, Carl Taton. Great grandchild Ora Bacon, and Shelly Bauman. Great granddaughter Beth Taton, and great-great grandkids Brandon Pearce and Rori Blakemore.

A Celebration of John's life will be held at the Elk City Community Building on Saturday, April 13th at noon.
